Pakistan has a very rich and colorful heritage of traditions, Dresses from Pakistan which is a beautiful blend of customs from all over the continent. I will try to describe some traditions on this web page:


Dresses:

National dress of Pakistan is called shalwar qameez. For ladies it is a three piece suite which includes a pair of pants called shalwar, a shirt called qameez and a scarf called dupatta. For men just two pieces no scarf, but sometimes on formal occasions they wear big shawls or thin scarves. There are also regional dresses which are different variations of shalwar qameez. Then there are formal and semi formal dresses for special occasions worn by ladies such as Gharara, Sharara, Saree, Chooridar and now Pant Qameez is in fashion. Weddings:

Weddings are a very important part of colorful Pakistani traditions; usually it takes 4-6 days Formal Pakistani Dresses to complete wedding functions. A wedding starts with a function called "Dholak" when everyone on bride’s or groom’s side usually the girls and ladies of the family get together and sing wedding songs all night with a small drum called dholak. SSecond day is called “Mayon” when they prepare the bride for the big day by putting a fragrant herbal mask on her face, hands and feet. Third day is called “Mehndi” when ladies of the family put henna on bride’s hands and everyone else wears henna on their hands and/or feet. All days including this day have few common things and those are singing and dancing on the beat of dholak. Fourth day is the wedding day when the groom comes to take his bride along with his family it is called “Shadi.” Fifth day is called “Walima,” when the groom and his family invite bride’s family and friend for a grand dinner to celebrate the wedding. Food:

Traditional Pakistani food is usually very spicy and takes a lot of time and hard work for preparation. There are some everyday dishes that don’t take as much time as the special dishes that are served on special occasions like weddings and get-togethers. Everyday foods are roti (bread), chawal (rice), salan (curry), daal (lentils) and lassi (yogurt drink). Special occasion dishes are murgh salan (chicken curry), biryani (rice with lots of chicken), nihari (spicy beef stew), haleem (mixed lentils cooked with lots of beef or chicken), tandori naan (bread), various sorts of kabobs, special desserts made with milk and cream.
