Alfie Parthum — Biography

Iowa class battleship firing full broadside test.

This image of the USS Iowa, dated 1 July 1984, is a stunning display of firepower, with mere tangential forces clearly acting upon the surface of the waters. Public domain image by U.S. Navy (available here).

Alfie Parthum is a college student living in Centreville, Virginia. He speaks English as a native language, and studies Japanese as a hobby; he wears glasses; has a baritone voice; he is right-handed, and uses his right hand for calligraphic work, arrow keys, and arcade buttons, among other things; and yes, “Alfie” is a nickname.

He has had an academic career spanning from beginning elementary school in Japan, eventually working his way through the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Virginia, and a few rough starts at a bachelor’s degree. All this has been towards his goal of one day being a video game designer; and if not that, perhaps a musician or an artist of some sort. Because he has many widespread interests, he believes his future is not yet set in stone.

Among the things he has done with computers, he has been programming since the age of seven (from out of his grandmother’s books on BASIC, among other things) and fiddling with HTML and web design since fifth grade (thanks to the many books available at the public library). He continues to do technological things to this day; for instance, he wrote this site with the aid of the text editor Vim, which is a very good text editor, particularly for writing and formatting code (though the learning curve is steep). Some dexterity is required to use it, but he has been training this his whole life by playing the piano, the trumpet, and lots of video games to begin with.

By now, you may be curious about what the image could possibly have to do with me. It is a battleship. I would like to have one as my ride to places (so people would, you know, stop cutting me off), but the interstates, unfortunately, are not wide enough.
