Shopping for Barbie is part of the fun
of collecting them. There are several sites on the Web where vintage Barbies can
be purchased. You can also start by buying current Barbies. Many new collections
come out each year. Barbie collections usually have a label on the box
stating that they are part of a collection.
Even in the store, always check the box
before buying a Barbie for collecting. The box 
should be as free of dents or
tears as possible.
Before buying a vintage doll, do some research on the current price. Several books, including The Barbie Doll Years, can be found with information on Barbie values. These books are usually published yearly though, so information might not be current. You can check on the Web for more current values.
I suggest just buying current collectible Barbies to start a collection. Once you know more about Barbie values, then you can invest in some of the more expensive dolls. My collection started with current dolls, and I am moving up to more expensive and harder to find dolls.
